Trillogy: Finale: Of Red Earth.
Today was the funeral mass...
Sitting through the mass, made me think alot of cultural rituals relating to death... And the true meaning of them. Not to ensure the spirit's entry to heaven, or etc. But instead to help us cope with the loss. By sharing in the pain of loosing a loved one, or rejoycing in the loss of a hated one, we gather together to remember the dearly departed. We commit these people to memory by participating in these rituals, and only by remembering them can we ensure the everlasting life of a person's spirit.
Not through good acts and obediance to a imaganary friend to gain the keys to an afterlife does the spirit live forever. It is through our memory, and the deeds and accomplishments, for good or bad, that people achieve everlasting life.
I think I would like to write my own death ritual. Borrowing a little here and there from various cultures and fictional cultures, Id like to create a funeral where people can express their sadness of loss, where people can rejoyce in what they have had and what they still have, and most importantly, so that people will remember me accuratly, that I may leave a legacy.
Greg Baum died last thursday. He was placed in the ground with honour and dignity on tuesday. His body will not raise from the grave, or ascend to a kingdom of heaven, or be condemded to a firey inferno for eternal torture. He will live forever in the memories of those who knew him and loved him.
His body is in the red earth now. His consciousness has ceased. but his Memory will endure.
We may all continue with our lives now. The time for mourning is over. It is now time to continue living. There's no point in honouring the dead by being dead ourselves...
